Start with the decision, not the bottle
Testing is the first step because color, taste, odor, and clarity cannot prove that private well water is safe. Private wells are not covered by federal rules for public water systems, so the owner is responsible for arranging testing and maintaining the supply. [1] Write down what you need to learn before calling a laboratory: a routine annual check, an investigation after an event, a diagnosis of a new symptom, or measurements for treatment design.
For a routine check, CDC recommends testing at least once each year for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids, and pH. [1] That baseline is a starting point, not a complete screen for every possible contaminant. Add tests that fit the well's location, nearby activities, household plumbing, and state or local guidance. If you are testing to select equipment, say so. The laboratory needs to know that untreated-water chemistry and contaminant concentration will guide the treatment decision.
Know when not to wait for the annual test
Arrange additional testing after flooding, well repair, or nearby land disturbance, and after a change in taste, color, or odor. Pregnancy and the start of infant use are also reasons to review whether the current test is adequate. [1] These are trigger events, not diagnoses. For example, an odor does not identify one chemical, and clear water does not rule out harmful germs or chemicals.
After a flood, suspected sewage entry, or a positive fecal indicator result, follow state or local health instructions instead of relying on a consumer strip. [1] If a report identifies harmful germs or chemicals, use bottled water or another safe source while you consult the health department about the result and next steps. [1] This is a measured precaution while the problem is being confirmed and addressed, not a reason to guess at treatment.
Choose the laboratory before you collect
- Use a state-certified laboratory. Ask your state certification program or health department for current options, then confirm that the laboratory is certified for the specific analyses you need. [3]
- Describe the question. Tell the laboratory whether this is routine testing, a flood or repair follow-up, a plumbing concern, a symptom investigation, or preparation for treatment.
- Confirm the panel. Ask whether the order includes the annual baseline and any risk-based additions. A broad package is not automatically the right package.
- Get the sampling kit from the laboratory. Obtain its bottles, preservatives, written collection steps, holding times, and packing or shipping directions. [1][2]
- Plan the clock. Choose a collection time that lets the sample reach the laboratory within its stated holding time. Confirm business hours and any cooling requirement before sampling.
Do not collect first and look for a laboratory later. A clean household jar may be wrong for the method, and some bottles contain preservative that must remain in place. Laboratory instructions override generic online advice because microbiological, volatile-organic, lead, and hydrogen-sulfide samples may require different collection procedures. [2]
Match the sample location to the question

Record the exact faucet or sampling port and whether treatment was operating or bypassed. “Kitchen” alone may not be enough if one cold line bypasses the softener while another fixture receives treated water. Do not treat samples from different locations as duplicates. They answer different questions.
Collect without improvising
Read the full laboratory instruction sheet before opening anything. Use the named sampling point, bottle order, flushing procedure, flow, and fill level. Do not rinse, alter, or substitute a bottle unless the laboratory says to do so. Different procedures apply to microbiological, volatile-organic, lead, and hydrogen-sulfide samples, so a direction for one bottle should not be copied to another. [2]
Label every bottle as directed. Record the sample location, collection date and time, treatment status, and anything unusual during collection. Pack, cool, and deliver the samples exactly as instructed. If preservative spills, a sterile cap touches the sink, a bottle leaks, or the delivery window may be missed, call the laboratory. Recollection is more useful than a result weakened by a preventable sampling error.
Before handing off the kit, compare every label with the laboratory order. Make sure the requested analyses have a matching bottle, the collection times are recorded, and the receiving plan still fits the stated holding times. Keep a copy of the sample list and note who delivered or shipped it. When several locations are sampled, use names such as “before treatment,” “after treatment,” and “kitchen cold tap” rather than numbering bottles from memory. This record helps the laboratory and homeowner interpret which part of the well system each result represents.
Use the report as the next decision point
Keep the complete report, including qualifiers and detection limits. Compare a raw-water result with a treated-water result only when the two samples were collected and documented in a useful way. If a finding is surprising, ask the laboratory about sample integrity and whether confirmation is appropriate. If treatment is being considered, share the raw-water report rather than a sales demonstration. Confirm the problem through an independent certified laboratory before buying equipment. [2]
