First, identify what the report actually describes
A laboratory number has meaning only when you know where and how the sample was collected. Start with the sample ID and location. A wellhead or before-treatment sample describes source water. A kitchen-tap sample includes the effects of household plumbing and existing treatment. Paired samples taken before and after treatment can show whether that device reduced the target contaminant. Confirm whether treatment was operating or bypassed, then check the collection date, laboratory receipt date, preservation notes, and qualification flags. [1] A result from the wrong location or a sample that missed a method requirement may not answer the question you intended to ask. Keep the original report rather than copying selected numbers into a sales form.
Read the report in a fixed order
- Verify sample identity. Match the bottle or sample number to the exact faucet, sampling port, and treatment status.
- Review sample quality. Note dates, receipt condition, preservation comments, holding-time notes, and every laboratory qualifier. [1]
- Read the complete analyte name. Similar names may be reported on different chemical bases.
- Check the result and unit together. Never compare the number alone.
- Identify the benchmark. Decide whether it is a primary health standard, secondary nuisance guideline, Health Advisory, state private-well value, or only a laboratory reference range. [2][3][4]
- Prioritize. Review microbial results and primary health contaminants before staining, taste, scale, or other nuisance issues. [1]
- Look for omissions. A report says nothing about contaminants that were not included in the order.
Translate units before comparing

| Not detected | This generally means the analyte was below the method's detection or reporting limit, not that its absolute concentration was zero. Read the laboratory's qualifier definitions. [1] |
A conversion can make numbers comparable, but it cannot fix a mismatch in chemical form or reporting basis. If the analyte name, unit, or qualifier is unclear, ask the laboratory to explain it before deciding that a result passes or fails.
Use the right kind of benchmark
EPA primary drinking-water standards are legally enforceable for public water systems and are designed to protect public health. They are useful health benchmarks for a private well, but federal public-water rules do not regulate an individual private well. [2] State private-well guidance may use a more protective value or give specific actions for local conditions.
EPA secondary standards are nonmandatory federal guidelines for effects such as taste, odor, color, staining, and corrosion. [3] EPA Health Advisories are health-based technical guidance, not legally enforceable federal standards. [4] A laboratory reference range may be useful for flagging a result, but do not assume it has the same purpose as a health standard or state action level.
The source and type of benchmark should appear beside your interpretation. This prevents a nuisance guideline from being presented as a health limit and prevents a nonregulatory advisory from being described as law.
If the report does not identify the benchmark type, make a small comparison table of your own with columns for analyte, result, unit, reporting basis, comparison value, benchmark source, and benchmark purpose. Do not fill a gap by guessing. Ask the certified laboratory about method and qualifier language, and ask the state or local health department which private-well guidance applies. A highlighted value can be useful for navigation, but the color or flag chosen by a report is not a substitute for that context.
Work through concrete examples carefully
EPA's public-water maximum contaminant level for nitrate measured as nitrogen is 10 mg/L, and infants under 6 months are especially vulnerable to excessive nitrate. [2] The words “measured as nitrogen” matter. A nitrate result reported on another basis cannot be compared directly with that number.
EPA's secondary guidelines are 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, based on noticeable aesthetic effects. [3] Those secondary values should not be labeled federal health limits. Manganese may also require separate health interpretation under applicable state guidance, so read the benchmark label rather than stopping at the first number on a report.
Interpret the report as a set. Low pH, for example, can increase plumbing corrosion and the release of lead or copper. [1] A treatment decision based on one highlighted analyte can miss the water chemistry that controls performance.
Turn the report into a calm decision sequence
- Address credible acute concerns first. If harmful germs or chemicals are reported, use bottled water or another safe source while consulting the health department about next steps. [5]
- Clarify surprising findings. Ask the laboratory about qualifiers, units, sample condition, and whether confirmation is appropriate. Do not average a serious exceedance away with older low results. [1]
- Separate health priorities from nuisance work. Handle microbial and primary health findings before optimizing for stain, odor, taste, scale, or equipment life.
- Prepare treatment inputs. Keep the raw-water concentration, chemical form, pH, hardness, flow demand, and competing contaminants together. Treatment selection requires more than concentration alone. [1]
- Plan verification. When treatment is installed, use paired before-and-after samples to evaluate the target reduction, following the certified laboratory's sampling directions.
- Keep a history. Retain complete reports so you can compare changes over time. [1]
Sources and limitations
What this page cannot tell you: A result applies to the sampled place, time, method, and analyte list. “Not detected” is not proof of absolute zero, and an untested contaminant remains unknown. Generic benchmarks cannot replace the laboratory's qualifier definitions or state and local guidance for a specific private well.
